A very large Antique Persian Ziegler Mahal Carpet hand knotted in West Iran. The carpet features a curvilinear all-over floral design of fronds, palmettes and flowers, with these further motifs detailed in the borders. A rich brown colour forms the ground of the rug, and this compliments the deep blue, cream and yellow tones that help delineate the patterns.
Persian Ziegler Mahal Rugs and Carpets are extremely desirable and especially rare in very large sizes. They are named after Ziegler & Co., a rug weaving company in the late 1800s. This company had workshops in the city of Sultanabad (now called Arak) and also in the village of Mahallat. As is the case with this piece, Ziegler Mahal Rugs featured palmettes, fronds and flower patterns woven from excellent quality wool by master weavers. This ensures the rug type's durability.
Such a large rug is sure to be the central focus of a room, but the flowing lines and softer colours of this Antique Persian Ziegler Mahal Carpet mean it commands presence without dominating an entire space. Large dining rooms, drawing rooms and bedrooms are best placed to incorporate such a magnificent piece!
