An Antique European Savonnerie Rug woven circa 1920. The rug features classic decorative features such as floral sprays, garlands and bouquets set against leaf and frond motifs. The pink and green colours that depict these motifs blend beautifully with the gold and beige-cream background tones.
European Savonnerie Rugs can date back to the 1600s and were hand knotted by skilled craftspeople in wool and also silk. Later antique examples of these rugs became associated with typically French designs, and modern handmade pieces with these patterns continued to be woven in China. This rug was hand knotted in Europe with excellent quality wool, making it very hardwearing to this day and soft to the touch. The rug is in very good overall condition, with light wear to the pile.
This Antique European Savonnerie Rug is a beautiful addition to classic spaces, adding softness to these settings without dominating design themes. The rug is an excellent statement piece for bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms.
